What to Pack for a Japan Day Trip: The Practical List

5 May 2026 · 4 min read · by the Tokyo With Us team

Day trips from Tokyo are easy — until you are halfway up 398 steps to a pagoda in the wrong shoes, or at a shrine that only takes cash. This is the compact list we send to guests before every tour.

The essentials, every season

Comfortable walking shoes you have already worn in — temple grounds are gravel, and viewpoints involve steps. A charged phone, a small power bank, and your passport (foreign visitors should carry it). Cash: many shrines, waterfall lifts and rural food stands still do not take cards. And an IC transit card such as Suica or Pasmo for any train legs and convenience stores.

By season

Winter (December–February): a warm layer even if Tokyo feels mild — the Fuji area and Nagano are 5–15 degrees colder, and the snow monkey trail is icy. Summer (June–August): sun protection, a folding umbrella and extra water. Spring and autumn: a light jacket for the temperature drop after sunset.

What to leave behind

Large luggage — stations have coin lockers, and private tours keep bags in the vehicle. Drone (flying is restricted around most shrines and parks). And heavy camera kits, unless photography is the point of your day; a phone is enough at every stop on our Mount Fuji, Kamakura, Nikko and Nagano routes.
