Mount Fuji Day Trip from Tokyo: The Complete Itinerary
20 August 2026 · 6 min read · by the Tokyo With Us team
Mount Fuji sits roughly 100 kilometres from central Tokyo, close enough for a single, unhurried day — if the day is planned properly. This is the exact route we use on our private Mount Fuji day trip from Tokyo, refined over many seasons to balance driving time, crowds and light.
Morning: leave Tokyo before the city wakes
An 8:00 hotel pickup puts you on the Chuo Expressway before the heaviest traffic. The first stop is Chureito Pagoda at Arakurayama Sengen Park — the five-storey pagoda framing Fuji that appears on every Japan postcard. Arriving before 10:00 means clearer air, fewer tour buses and the best light on the mountain's face.
From there it is a short drive to Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine, the traditional starting point of the Yoshida climbing route, where tall cedar trees line the approach. Both stops are gentle walks and suit all ages.

Midday: Oshino Hakkai and lunch
Oshino Hakkai is a small village built around eight spring-fed ponds of melted snow from Fuji's slopes. The water is startlingly clear, and the village lanes are full of soba restaurants, grilled trout stands and shops selling local fruit. Allow about an hour, plus time for lunch — this is the natural midpoint of the day.
Afternoon: Lake Kawaguchi, Oishi Park and the 5th Station
The afternoon belongs to Lake Kawaguchi, the most accessible of the Fuji Five Lakes. Oishi Park on the north shore gives you the classic flower-fields-and-Fuji photograph, and in calm weather the mountain reflects perfectly in the water. When road conditions allow, the day finishes at the Mount Fuji 5th Station, halfway up the mountain at 2,300 metres.
You are back at your Tokyo hotel around 18:00. If you would rather not manage trains and buses between these spread-out stops, you can check availability for the private tour on GetYourGuide — vehicle, guide, tolls and hotel pickup are all included, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before.
