The 4 Best Day Trips from Tokyo, Compared by a Local Team

14 February 2026 · 6 min read · by the Tokyo With Us team

If you have one or two spare days in Tokyo, four day trips stand above the rest. We run private tours to all four, so this is our honest, un-salesy comparison — including who each trip does not suit.

Mount Fuji: the icon

The Mount Fuji day trip is the one nobody regrets: pagoda viewpoints, a spring-fed village, lakeside parks and — with luck — the mountain itself. Best for first-time visitors and photographers. Not ideal in peak summer, when cloud often hides the summit after mid-morning.

Kamakura: culture by the sea

The Kamakura & Enoshima day trip mixes a giant bronze Buddha, garden temples, a lively food street and a seaside sunset. It is the shortest journey of the four and the most weather-proof. Best for travellers who want history without a long drive.

Nikko: gold leaf and waterfalls

The Nikko day trip combines Japan's most ornate shrine with a crater lake and a 97-metre waterfall. In autumn it is arguably the most beautiful place in the Kanto region. Best for culture lovers; note that the shrine complex involves some uphill walking.

Nagano: the snow monkeys

The Nagano snow monkey day trip is the wildest of the four: macaques bathing in a steaming hot spring, plus the ancient Zenkoji Temple. Best from December to March and for anyone travelling with children. It is the longest day — worth it, but start early.

Still unsure? Message us on WhatsApp with your dates and we will tell you plainly which day fits your trip. All four tours are listed on our tours page with booking through GetYourGuide.
