Lake Kawaguchi Guide: The Best Mount Fuji Viewpoints
20 March 2026 · 5 min read · by the Tokyo With Us team
Lake Kawaguchi is the most visitor-friendly of the Fuji Five Lakes: an easy shoreline, cafés with mountain views, and half a dozen famous viewpoints. Here are the spots worth your time, in the order the light favours them.
Morning: Oishi Park and the north shore
Oishi Park, on the lake's northwest shore, is the classic: flower beds in the foreground, the lake in the middle, Fuji filling the sky. Morning light falls on the mountain's face and the water is usually calmest early, giving the famous 'reverse Fuji' reflection. The north shore walking path between Oishi Park and the music forest museum is quiet and full of angles.

Midday: Mt. Kachi Kachi Ropeway
The ropeway near the eastern shore climbs to an observation deck on Mount Tenjo for a panoramic view down over the lake to Fuji. Go around midday when the harsher light is better spent on a wide panorama than a reflection shot. The deck has the famous tanuki-and-rabbit statues from a Japanese folk tale.
Late afternoon: the quieter corners
As the light softens, move to the western shore near Nagasaki Park or the small Ubuyagasaki cape — locals' spots where Fuji glows orange at sunset over the water. In February the lakeside hosts a winter fireworks festival; in autumn the maple corridor near the Itchiku Kubota Art Museum turns red.
Every one of these stops fits naturally into our private Mount Fuji day trip, and your guide adjusts the order to the day's weather — check availability on GetYourGuide.
