Tokyo to Mount Fuji: Train, Bus or Private Car Compared

Highway bus: cheapest, but fixed

Direct highway buses run from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko in about two hours for roughly ¥2,000 each way. They are excellent value and book up days ahead in peak season. The catch: once at Kawaguchiko you depend on local loop buses and taxis, which limits you to one or two sights in a day.

Train: scenic but indirect

The JR Chuo Line to Otsuki connects with the Fujikyuko line to Kawaguchiko — around 2.5 hours and ¥4,000+ each way with limited express supplements. The last stretch has lovely mountain views, but the same local-transport limitation applies, and you are tied to timetables.

Private car: the whole region in one day

A private vehicle with a driver-guide turns the day around: hotel pickup, the pagoda before the crowds, Oshino Hakkai at lunch, the lake in the afternoon light — no timetables, no queues for loop buses. For couples, families and small groups the per-person cost is often closer to the train than expected.
